The University of Mississippi’s Information Literacy Committee began in 2005 as a library committee; it is currently a sub-committee of the General Education Committee.

Charge

The Committee advises the General Education Committee and the Dean of Libraries in the implementation of the national Framework for Information Literacy for Higher Education (ALA, revised 2015). 

 

Definition

Information literacy is the set of integrated abilities encompassing the reflective discovery of information, the understanding of how information is produced and valued, and the use of information in creating new knowledge and participating ethically in communities of learning.

The Committee:

  • Facilitates the implementation of information literacy standards into the curriculum
  • Provides faculty and staff with learning opportunities and materials that will support the incorporation of information literacy into library instruction programs and the university curriculum
  • Makes use of online resources to further faculty, staff, and student learning
  • Provides assessment of student learning of information literacy skills

Membership

Positions appointed by Chair with the approval of the Dean of Liberal Arts
